Tablewaiters were an Australian band active throughout the early 1980s.

Founding members Graeme Synold and Tony Ameneiro met in Sydney whilst studying art in 1980 at the Alexander Mackie College of Advanced Education (later a campus of Sydney College of Advanced Education), the city's leading art school. Various line up changes settled down in 1981 with Gye Bennetts on drums, Ian Robertson on bass, and Ed Lee on guitar, along with Tony Ameneiro on synthesizer and Graeme Synold on vocals. This line up recorded the infamous "Gate" album with Lobby_Loyde in 1981 at the Alberts recording studio in Sydney. This album was never released due to financial problems. Various bootleg copies are in existence from the master tapes, though poor in quality as they never reached the mixing stage. The intended single "Between the Lines" and "Access" was never released. One of their first appearances was as support act to Sardine v at the Civic Hotel in Sydney in 1980.
There was also a previous series of recordings with Colin Newham of The Reels which led to a close bond between the two bands.
Tablewaiters were also managed at this time by SCAM (suss city artist management) a management company that also looked after Sardine v, The_Sunnyboys, Machinations_(band) and Local Product.
Gye Bennetts left after the recording of Gate to be replaced by Phillip Hyrwka on drums. At this point Rob Barnham became their regular manager. A publishing deal was signed, with the 1984 recording and release of the double A side 7" 45 rpm single Scattered Visions / Small Quiet Children, released through Powderworks Records & Tapes POW 0227. After some more self funded studio recording the band broke up in 1986.
The band was noted for its powerful live performances. Included in their live sets were covers by Magazine (band) and Joy Division.
With the Australia pub rock scene in its’ heyday the band performed several nights a week, both in support spots and as headline act. Being Sydney based they were regulars at The Civic Hotel, The Trade Union Club, Governor’s Pleasure at the Rocks, as well as many suburban venues. In Melbourne they had several residencies at Macy’s in Toorak. Several tours and important support spots included playing with Simple Minds, The Psychedelic Furs, Split Enz, INXS, Midnight Oil, Machinations (band), Laughing Clowns, Models (band), Hunters and Collectors, Eurogliders & The Birthday Party (band).
