เป็นโรคทางพันธุกรรมที่ถ่ายทอดผ่านทางกระแสเลือด  เกิดบนโครโมโซมร่างกาย  แบบด้อย  (Autosomal  recessive)ในปี  1994  สหรัฐฯ  ได้ค้นพบว่า  ผู้ที่เป็นโรคนี้จะมีอายุขัยโดยเฉลี่ย  คือ  
อายุ  42  ปีในผู้ชายและ  50 ปีในผู้หญิง  แต่ปัจจุบันสามารถอยู่ได้เกินอายุ  50 ปี  เนื่องจากผู้ป่วยมีการดูแลรักษาตัวที่ดี  และในสหราชอาณาจักรคาดว่าจะมีอายุขัยสำหรับผู้ป่วยโรคนี้  คือ  53-60  ปี
