เป็นสกุลของปลาในวงศ์นี้ ที่เป็นที่รู้จักกันเป็นอย่างดี ในแง่ของการเป็น[[ปลาสวยงาม]]ที่เลี้ยงกันอย่างแพร่หลาย มีลักษณะเด่น คือ เป็นปลาที่ว่ายหากินเป็นฝูง บริเวณผิวน้ำ กิน[[แมลง]]ขนาดเล็ก, [[ไรแดง]], [[ลูกน้ำ]] รวมทั้ง[[ตะไคร่น้ำ]]หรือ[[สาหร่าย]]เป็นอาหาร มี[[Sexual dimorphism|ความแตกต่างระหว่างเพศสูง]] กล่าวคือ [[ตัวผู้]]จะมีขนาดเล็กกว่ามาก แต่มีสีสันรวมทั้งครีบต่าง ๆ สวยงามกว่า ขณะที่[[ตัวเมีย]]มีขนาดใหญ่กว่า แต่ครีบต่าง ๆ สั้นและสีไม่สวยเท่า 

เป็นปลาที่กระจายพันธุ์ใน[[เขตร้อน]]ของ[[ทวีปอเมริกา]] พบได้ตั้งแต่ตอนใต้ของ[[สหรัฐอเมริกา]], [[อเมริกากลาง]], [[แคริบเบียน]] จนถึง[[อเมริกาใต้]] เป็นปลาที่พบได้ทั้งน้ำจืด, น้ำกร่อย รวมถึงในทะเล หลายชนิดมีครีบหลังที่สูงเหมือนใบเรือ มีขนาดที่หลากหลายตั้งแต่ 4-5 เซนติเมตร จนถึงใหญ่เต็มที่ได้ถึง 20 เซนติเมตร และมีสีสันต่าง ๆ หลากหลายมาก ทั้งสีขาว, สีเหลือง, สีส้ม, สีดำ หรือลายจุด อาศัยอยู่ในอุณหภูมิของน้ำประมาณ 25-28 องศาเซลเซียส (77-82 องศาฟาเรนไฮน์)
