Gaara là con trai út của Kazekage đệ tứ. Khi còn trong lòng mẹ, Chiyo (bà của Sasori) đã phong ấn con Shukaku một đuôi (Nhất Vỹ) vào cơ thể của cậu. Mẹ của Gaara là Karura đã qua đời sau khi sinh ra cậu. Vì mang trong mình con quái vật Shukaku cậu bé luôn được cát bảo vệ, không bao giờ bị thương và mang một sức mạnh lớn.
