Trận động đất này ở Chile có cường độ gấp 500 lần trận [[Động đất Haiti 2010|động đất ở Haiti]] một tháng trước đó và gần thủ đô [[Santiago de Chile|Santiago]] của Chile, tuy nhiên lại gây thiệt hại nhân mạng thấp hơn nhiều nếu so với [[Haiti]], vì [[chính phủ Chile|chính quyền Chile]] đã có những chuẩn bị chu đáo từ lâu, như là tập dượt trẻ em cách đối phó khi động đất xảy ra và luật pháp Chile yêu cầu các công trình xây dựng phải chống được động đất cũng như mạng lưới các nhân viên cứu hộ phản ứng cực nhanh <ref>[http://vnexpress.net/GL/The-gioi/2010/02/3BA1923E/ Động đất Chile mạnh gấp 500 lần ở Haiti]</ref>.
