Das Ziel des Projekts '''Wikidata''' ist, eine freie [[de:Wissensdatenbank|Wissensdatenbank]] über unsere Welt zu erstellen, die gleichermaßen von Menschen und Maschinen gelesen und gepflegt werden kann. Es wird Daten in allen Sprachen der Wikimedia-Projekte bereitstellen und einen zentralisierten Zugriff erlauben, in ähnlicher Weise, wie Wikimedia Commons dies für Multimedia-Dateien ermöglicht. Wikidata wird voraussichtlich als neues Projekt auf Wikimedia betrieben und gewartet.
Die grundlegende Entwicklung des Projekts wird mit großzügigen Spenden des [http://www.ai-squared.org/ Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence] <nowiki>[ai]</nowiki><sup>2</sup>, der [http://www.moore.org/ Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation] und von [http://www.google.com Google, Inc.] gefördert.

Der aktuelle Status und Zeitplan von Wikidata ist:
* The Wikidata development team started working on the technical proposal in April 2012. Some had already started in March, preparing the work.
* The development team is presenting previews to engage the community in the development; the public demo launched in May.
* The Wikidata development team had a demo and heavily attended presentations at Wikimania 2012.
* The Wikidata development team launched the language links features in October 2012.
* The Wikidata development team aims to have ways to input and browse data available for infoboxes by December 2012 / January 2013.
* The initial development for Wikidata is planned for one year: April 2012 – March 2013.
