;Abstract ''(at least 300 words to describe your proposal)'':
This presentation and discussion is about free licenses vs. author appreciation.

One of the [[:en:WP:5P3|main pillars of Wikipedia]] are the "[[c:Commons:Copyright tags|free licenses]]" that all content has to be put under. While the "free" in ''free license'' has been broadly publicised a majority of people misinterpret it to giving no restrictions at all to re-use the content. On thecontrary, most of the "free licenses" allow only re-using under restrictive requirements like giving the name of the author / artist, a link to the full license text, citing the source or only re-distributing it under the same license terms. Some people are really astoniched or even enraged when they discover that they must not upload a file from Commons to Facebook, Youtube or Twitter.

On the other hand, within the Wikimedia communities there are not a small account of users who exercise a fundamentally piratesque attitude and try to force any given material under a free licence, regarding this as a fight for liberty. Not only those often forget, that all Wikipedia and Commons license allow unlimited commercial use of the material and due to the immense global reach of Wikimedia projects this often has a devastating impact on the original creator's possibilities to uphold his legally granted copyrights.

And even when copy-pasting text within Wikipedia, we often see users neglect using the basic editing tools provided by MediaWiki, like simply adding a link where they copied the work of others from.

The session will be in English and depending on the listeners also in german and french.
