Revision 20144 of "Submissions/Democracy" on wikimania2016wiki; Submission no. <!-- will be added by the Programme Committee--> ;Title of the submission: Wikipedia and Democracy ;Type of submission (discussion, hot seat, panel, presentation, tutorial, workshop): Presentation & discussion ;Author of the submission: Jan ;E-mail address: Special:EmailUser/.js ;Username: .js ;Country of origin: Europe ;Affiliation, if any (organisation, company etc.): Volunteer, self-employed ;Personal homepage or blog: none of interest ;Abstract (at least 300 words to describe your proposal): This presentation and discussion is about the democratic structures of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia movement. While some "benevolent dictator", "constitutional monarch" or "spiritual leader" once declared that Wikipedia should be "not an experiment in democracy", there a very many structures that have developed within and by the contributors towards democratic participation. Some reasonable arguments even state that "of course consenus is voting", too. The WikiProject Democracy lists a lot of possibilities for everyone around the world to vote, elect and discuss. Regarding the recent ousting of a community-elected member from the WMF Board of Tustees (the highest ruling organ in the Wikiverse) and the highly emotional discussions about, we as contributors always face the question: do we feel represented by the institutions and persons with decisive powers, or do we feel a need for change? Facing a world that keeps during the last milleniums, centuries and still decades always searching for better ways how to cooperate and organise, the global "collaboration" project Wikipedia is seen as one of the biggest and most important according to "(self)-controlled swarm intelligence". The session will be in English and depending on the listeners also in german and french. ;Track: * WikiCulture & Community ;Length of session (if other than 30 minutes, specify how long): 18 minutes (+ talk) ;Will you attend Wikimania if your submission is not accepted?: Depending on the scholarship ;Slides or further information (optional): ;Special requests: <!-- for example - cannot present on Saturday --> <!-- Do not edit the section below. --> == Interested attendees == If you are interested in attending this session, please sign with your username below.
