The Thai foreign ministry did not return calls yesterday, but in a statement issued on January 23 it obliquely acknowledged the forced removal of the Rohingya asylum seekers back to sea.

Four days later, as international outrage mounted about the disabling of the Rohingya boats taken out to sea, it issued another news release with a denial of mistreatment.

"This must be categorically denied as having no place in policy and procedures," the statement said, adding that the military would be investigating the claims.//-->

The Burmese military junta has flatly denied the Rohingya exist, while both Thailand and Indonesia have previously described them as "economic migrants" and vowed to return them to Burma.

Alleged kingpin held as boat stopped
INDONESIAN and Australian police have arrested a man believed to be responsible for sending three boatloads of asylum seekers to Australia.

The joint operation conducted in south-east Sulawesi resulted in a boat containing 40 Afghan and Pakistani asylum seekers being prevented from making the journey to Australia, the seizure of the boat and the arrest of its crew.

The alleged people-smuggler, an Indonesian named Haji Tahir, from Kupang in West Timor, and his human cargo were detained on Monday after a sophisticated operation that included the use of aircraft.

Police sources in Jakarta said Tahir was believed to have been one of the ringleaders in three successful missions to send boats to Australia as well as several ventures that failed.

It is the latest in a long line of arrests over the past six months as people-smugglers increasingly target Australia.

This week's operation was led by Indonesian police but the Australian Federal Police played a key role and two officers were present at the arrest.

"The arrest was directly supported by the Australian Federal Police, the Bau Bau police along with their intelligence unit," said Commissioner Untung Sangaji, who headed the police team.

The arrest of Tahir is the second big breakthrough in the past two months. An alleged human trafficking kingpin, Haji Sakih, was arrested in December in East Java.

The Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, last year announced increased co-operation between Australia and Indonesia on people-smuggling.
