There is a [[w:c:Commons:Village_pump/Proposals#Create_PNG_thumbnails_of_static_GIF_images|proposal]] at the Commons Village Pump requesting feedback about the thumbnails of static GIF images: It states that static GIF files should have their thumbnails created in PNG. The advantages of PNG over GIF would be visible especially with GIF images using an alpha channel. (compare the thumbnails on the side)

When using data from Wikidata on Wikipedia and other sister projects, there is currently a limitation in place that hinders some use cases: data can only be accessed from the corresponding item. So, for example, the Wikipedia article about Berlin can only get data from the Wikidata item about Berlin but not from the item about Germany. This had technical reasons. We are now removing this limitation. It is already done for many projects. Your project is one of the next ones. We will roll out this feature here on August 12.

We invite you to play around with this new feature if you are one of the people who have been waiting for this for a long time. If you have technical issues/questions with this you can come to [[d:Wikidata:Contact the development team]].

A note of caution: Please be careful with how many items you use for a single page. If it is too many pages, loading might get slow. We will have to see how the feature behaves in production to see where we need to tweak and how.

Dat daar nou al 'n boek van 456 bladsye oor ''Boontjieskraal en sy mense'' in 2013 geskryf is, is dit duidelik dat die verhaal nog lank nie dood is nie.

Selfs ons pastoor het Boontjieskraal as "tema" gebruik om te toon dat vloeke nie oorgedra kan word nie (hoewel ek natuurlik sou verskil: as sekere familiekwale dan geneties oordraagbaar is, geld dit nie ook as 'n "familievloek" nie?).

Ek dink aan [[Die Heks van Hexrivier]] wat eintlik maar net 'n tragedie is - sy stel 'n gevaarlike taak aan haar bemindes, haar ridder op die wit perd wat sy lankal moes stukkend gevry het tuimel na benede, sy raak kranksinnig oor haar groot verlies (in die jare voor Facebook en aanlyn-koop-'n-bruidegom), sy werp haarself in die diepste duisternis. En sy word 'n spook. Sela. 

Ek weet daar is byvoorbeeld nog 'n welbekende legende (wat ook weerspieël word in ''Toorberg'' deur Etienne van Heerden) van 'n seuntjie wat in 'n bergskeur geval het. Omdat hulle hom nie kon uitkry nie, het sy pa hom op die plek die genadeslag toegedien - hom doodgeskiet. Wie die persone is of was, weet mens nooit nie. Net dat dit gebeur het.

== Wiki Revision labels & Scoring as a Service for Afrikaans Wikipedia ==

Hello Afrikaans Wikipedia,

I apologize for my complete lack of Afrikaans skills. I would most welcome if my post is translated to Afrikaans.

So computers are very good at crunching numbers. Your average calculator can out smart you in arithmetic. However computers are terrible at pretty much in everything else. Programming computers to under take any task no matter how simple beyond computing tends to be very difficult. This is where Artificial Intelligence comes in. With Artificial Intelligence we teach computers how to solve problems without explicit programming for the solution. This is what we are doing.

We are working on a project called [[m:Research:Revision scoring as a service]] which aims to provide quality control Artificial Intelligence infrastructure for Mediawiki and Wikimedia projects. We already have our system implemented and running on Azerbaijani, English, French, Indonesian, Persian, Portuguese, Spanish, Turkish and Vietnamese editions on Wikipedia. We are hoping to adapt our tool to serve Afrikaans language as well as [[m:Research:Revision scoring as a service/Word lists|a number of other languages]].

We are currently mainly focusing on vandalism detection where we provide an API ([[m:ORES]]) that provides scores. We have made an effort to keep our system robust. 

The examples I'll provide are based on a machine learning algorithm that was trained to use 20,000 reverted edits. This is kind of modelling is problematic for two reasons. First is, there are non-vandalism related reasons for edits to be reverted such as mistakes from new users, this would develop such an unproductive bias. Second problem would be it lacks the ability to distinguish good faith users from malicious ones. To demonstrate our system I will give three examples from English wikipedia. I have picked these three semi-random.

We only have this system on English wikipedia at the moment but we would be more than happy to expand to other language editions. I am uncertain if Afrikaans Wikipedia has a similar quality assessment scale. I have picked 5 random articles to demonstrate this.

Typical problem is that humans typically do not re-asses articles over time or articles are never assessed in the first place. Our system circumvents this problem by automating this.

We unfortunately lack language features such as [[m:Research:Revision scoring as a service/Word lists/af|bad words, informal words and stop words]]. This would be very helpful. We also need a localization of [[:en:Wikipedia:Labels]] serving as our local landing page.

Once these are complete, we would like to start an edit quality campaign where we request the local community to hand code/label ~2000 revisions labeling them productive/damaging and good faith/bad faith. This would be similar to the campaign on English Wikipedia [[:en:Wikipedia:Labels/Edit quality]].

After this we will be able to generate scores for revisions that is usable by gadgets such as ScoredRevisions as well as (potentially) tools like huggle. If community desires it, it can even be used to create a local vandalism reversion bot.

So in a nutshell our algorithm relies on community input to support the community. Feel free to ask any questions. Since the last newsletter, the [[mw:VisualEditor|Editing Team]] have been working on mobile phone support. They have fixed many bugs and improved language support.  They post weekly status reports [[mw:VisualEditor/changelog|on mediawiki.org]]. Their workboard is available [[phab:project/board/483/|in Phabricator]].  Their [[mediawikiwiki:VisualEditor/Current_priorities|current priorities]] are improving language support and functionality on mobile devices.

The team attended Wikimania 2015 in Mexico City. There they participated in the Hackathon and met with individuals and groups of users. In particular, Sakha improved from 12.2% to 94.2%; Brazilian Portuguese went from 50.6% to 100%; Taraškievica went from 44.9% to 85.3%; Doteli went from 1.3% to 41.2%. For '''documentation messages''' (on mediawiki.org), we saw the initiative affecting 24 languages. On the English Wikipedia, 10% of newly created accounts are now offered both the visual and the wikitext editors.  A [[m:Research:VisualEditor's_effect_on_newly_registered_editors/May_2015_study|recent controlled trial]] showed no significant difference in survival or productivity for new users in the short term.  New users with access to VisualEditor were very slightly less likely to produce results that needed reverting. Hier het ons twee artikels oor Klas 31 diesellokomotiewe. Die lokomotiewe is nie dieselfde.  Ons kan onmiddelik sien dat die Engelse artikel die Britse lokomotief beskryf, maar die titel van die Afrikaanse artikel sê nie van watter land die Suid-Afrikaanse lokomotief kom nie. As ons die Engelse artikels [[:en:South African Class D 2-6-4T]] en [[:en:South African Class A 4-8-2T]] besoek, sien ons dat die SAR/SAS Klas A lokomotief was by die [[Natalse Regeringspoorweë]] as 'n Klas D lokomotief bekend en dat by die NGR is 'n andere lokomotief as 'n Klas A lokomotief bekend.  Ons kan probleem oplos om die artikel "Klas 31-diesellokomotief" te hernaam. Daar is verskillende keuse:

Dit klop hoegenaamd nie met die ''[https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikitrends/afrikaans-most-visited-today.html Afrikaans most visited articles today]'' van 'n maand terug nie. Terwyl Latyn gesukkel het om dubbelsyfers te haal, het Afrikaans reeds drie tot vier syfers gehad; soms selfs meer as by Nieunoors. En ek het gereeld gaan kyk, soms twee tot drie maal per dag. Hier word Afrikaans skrapelings bokant Latyn gedruk. Ook Engels het lanklaas so vrot gedoen: teen eind Julie haal dit skaars 7 miljoen bladtrekke per uur; gewoonlik is dit 8 tot 10 miljoen bladtrekke. Hul statistiek is beslis verkeerd; ek gaan dit nie aanteken nie.

Dit lyk my, as ek die pamflet reg lees, sal die verrigtinge by die Groenkloof Research Commons Ouditorium, Biblioteek, Universiteit van Pretoria se Groenkloofkampus plaasvind. So enigiemand wat geldwassery wil toepas (of wie se erfgeld hom brand) dit is  R175,00 per kop en R100,00 per gade. Hoekom so duur? Want jy betaal vir die intelligente geselskap: dit is hoekom Rockkonserte so goedkoop is. Jy gaan skouers skuur met die room van die oes [juis, room word maklik suur!]. 
Die goeie nuus is, verversings is beskikbaar - so eet my porsie ook wat ek gaan misloop.
