তিনি লন্ডনের ইউনিভার্সিটি অব ওরিয়েন্টাল অ্যান্ড আফ্রিকান স্টাডিজের বাংলা বিভাগের উর্ধ্বতন অধ্যাপক। তাঁর গবেষণা ছিল বাংলা ভাষা ও সাহিত্য নিয়ে। তিনি বেশ কয়েকটি বাংলা রচনা অনুবাদ করেছেন এবং তিনি রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর ও  মাইকেল মধুসূদন দত্তের সাথেও কাজ করেছেন।
