'''Pachomius''', who died around AD [[345]] in Tabennisi, [[Egypt]], was one of the founders of [[Christianity|Christian]] [[monasticism]].

Pachomius was a young [[Egypt]]ian who according to tradition was raised a pagan and became a Christian after service in the [[Roman empire|Roman]] army.

Pachomius set out to lead the life of a hermit near [[Anthony the Great|St. Anthony of Egypt]], whose practices he imitated. Like many later monastic founders, he was quickly swamped with young men seeking his guidance in imitating his life, and became the founder of a monastery by default.

Earlier monasticism had been solitary or ''eremitic.'' Male or female monastics lived in individual huts or caves and met only for occasional worship services.  Pachomius seems to have invented the community or ''cenobitic'' organization, in which male or female monastics lived together and had their possessions in common under the leadership of an [[abbot]] or [[abbess]]. This first cenobitic monastery was in Tabennisi, Egypt. He is also credited with being the first Christian to use and recommend use of a [[prayer rope]]. He was visited once by [[Basil of Caesarea]], who took many of his ideas and implemented them in Caesarea, where Basil also made some adaptations of his own.

There were several written documents available in the 5th Century that purported to be monastic rules or organizational regulations written by Pachomius.  These were translated into [[Latin]] by [[Jerome]].

Alamo is located at 32°8'54" North, 82°46'43" West (32.148305, -82.778565){{GR|1}}.

According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the city has a total area of 5.0 [[square kilometer|km²]] (1.9 [[square mile|mi²]]).  5.0 km² (1.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.52% is water.

As of the [[census]]{{GR|2}} of [[2000]], there are 1,943 people, 363 households, and 255 families residing in the city.  The [[population density]] is 390.7/km² (1,014.5/mi²).  There are 414 housing units at an average density of 83.3/km² (216.2/mi²).  The racial makeup of the city is 46.37% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 52.60% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.00% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.00% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.00% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.57% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]], and 0.46% from two or more races.  0.93% of the population are [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race.

There are 363 households out of which 33.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.4% are [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 21.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.5% are non-families. 28.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.  The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the city the population is spread out with 14.3% under the age of 18, 14.1% from 18 to 24, 44.9% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 7.4% who are 65 years of age or older.  The median age is 35 years.  For every 100 females there are 257.8 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 323.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $25,000, and the median income for a family is $30,125. Males have a median income of $25,921 versus $20,208 for females.
