It has been suggested that the origins of the slur are in the slang word for semen, basically implying that the person in question is a "waste of sperm". It seems equally possible that the term arose independantly of this meaning in the Newfoundland context. Can anyone source this or is this just somebody's personal speculation? Looks a bit like original research that I'd favor removing, unless someone has some experience with them being connected. I've made some changes to this entry for greater NPOV Poor grasp of the "English language" has been replaced with "standard English." Linguists recognize that standard English and Newfoundland English are all just different dialects within English as a whole. "Terrible grammar" has been replaced with "non-standard grammar".

I've entered information about who uses the term "skeet". I've added a bit about how the term has changed. Ten years ago 'skeet' had more to do with having a 'stache and listening to AC/DC than 50 Cent or whatever. I've also taken the information about Gazebow Unit and put it in a seperate entry.

BTW, I did some of this before I logged in. Sorry.

Can I also say that I think its awesome and hilarious that Wikipedia should have an entry for Skeet.

: I'm glad you approve. :D I found the other examples of the word here, but nothing refering to the Newfoundland definition, which is a word almost everyone here knows. I actually had quite a bit of trouble initially putting the words together that accurately described what a skeet is — it's not something that's really been addressed before; it's always been something you just kinda know and hear. And it's only now, with Gazeebow Unit, that something in popular culture has purposely portrayed the stereotype. --Zippo 21:28, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

I think the old way was best, beings that Skeet (slang) is the most prevalent usage by far. But, I can see why you did it. Avengerx 02:40, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

I don't completely agree with Snook being considered a skeet. If the character were a teenager, perhaps, but Snook more-or-less just portrays a stereotypical Newfie... not a skeet. Anyone else's thoughts?

:I agree. I've never seen Snook as "skeety." Wilson 13:13, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

:I'm glad someone agrees with me. The character Snook is not even a teenager, and doesn't portray the negative stereotypes that define what a skeet is. I'll remove it and if anyone disagrees with me, please discuss. Also, what happened to the Gazeebow Unit page? Vandals? --Zippo 21:23, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
::I believe it was removed for lack of notability (as no albums have been released yet and they haven't received enough critical acclaim). Wilson 04:47, 4 February 2006 (UTC)
:::That's unfortunate about the Gazebow Unit article, because despite their lack of official releases (or performances!) they're actually quite well known. I can't source this, but I'm positive that thousands of people know them. My own experience is that they are disturbingly well known in Newfoundland, to the point that I've never encountered anyone under 30 who hasn't heard of them. In terms of media, I know that there was a paper written about them, and that they were on CBC Radio, but they're more of a grassroots phenomena (word of mouth, burned CD-Rs, shared MP3, etc). They're a fad, certainly, but I think a notable one as far as Newfoundland culture is concerned.

They're important to this page because, as you say Zippo, they kindof represent a concrete media embodiment of the skeet image. Nonplus 06:39, 5 February 2006 (UTC) (formerly Delief)
