Herbert has coached many students to competition and grading merits. He has produced numerous ''dan'' grades, national champions and international competitors who have competed up to world championship standard. He has also taught classed and coached squad training sessions at Enoeda’s Marshall Street and [[Budowkai]] clubs.

Herbert was originally graded to 1st Dan Black Belt in 1989 by the late Sensei Pauline (Laville) Bindra (8th Dan), a rank he later ratified with the [[JKA]] under Sensei Enoeda in 1995. Master Enoeda also graded him to the JKA ranks of 2nd and 3rd Dan in 1996 and 1999 respectively. Following the death of his mentor, Herbert was graded to 4th Dan by JKA chief instructor Sensei Massaki Ueki in 2003.
