Paul Herbert is an English born Shotokan Karate 5th dan and former student of the Japanese Master Keinosuke Enoeda (8th dan, 9th dan awarded posthumously JKA). Originally known for his success in Shobu Ippon competition where he was a former English, British and International champion in both Kata and Kumite, Herbert is now an instructor and teaches throughout the UK and Europe.

Early years
Herbert was born in South London in March 1974 and began his martial arts training in 1984 under the tutelage of a local club instructor. During the mid-1990s he became a student of Enoeda at his dojo in Marshall Street Baths, in the Soho district of London.

Competition
Herbert was involved in tournament karate for 19 years, with ten of those spent as a full England and Great Britain international. During this period he represented his country at 18 major international championships, amongst them seven JKA Europeans and the 2004 JKA World Cup in Tokyo, Japan. With over 200 competition honours to his name Herbert retired as the unbeaten JKA national kata champion in 2004 at the age of 29. He has stated in numerous interviews that the highlight of his competition career was winning the KUGB British championship for Enoeda's dojo, just weeks after Enoeda's death in 2003.

Teaching
Herbert has coached many students to competition and grading merits. He has produced numerous dan grades, national champions and international competitors who have competed up to world championship standard. He has also taught classed and coached squad training sessions at Enoeda’s Marshall Street and Budowkai clubs.

Dan grades
Herbert was originally graded to 1st dan black belt in 1989 by Sensei Pauline Laville Bindra, a rank he later ratified with the JKA under Sensei Enoeda in 1995. Master Enoeda also graded him to the JKA ranks of 2nd and 3rd Dan in 1996 and 1999 respectively. Following the death of his mentor, Herbert was graded to 4th Dan by JKA chief instructor Sensei Massaki Ueki in 2003. Herbert graded to his current rank of 5th Dan under Sensei Dave Hazard in 2008.

International shotokan training camp
Herbert is also the founder of the International Shotokan Training Camp, an annual Karate course held since 2005 in Rouen, France which attracts practitioners from all over the world who come to train with Herbert and other senior guest karate-ka.

Validating a traditional martial art
Prior to becoming a professional instructor, Herbert validated his skills as a serious no-nonsense martial artist and authority on effective personal protection by working in a number of conflict based environments. Working for various law enforcement groups, the national media, certificated debt recovery companies, bail firms and from working as a close quarter bodyguard. The former holder of an ABA boxing title, Herbert now trains daily with professional cage fighters at a Mixed Martial Arts gym in the Medway region.
