Many peoplersons perform excellent genealogical research (or hire professionals that comb the archives and databases for them) and put a lot of effort in constructing their own family trees. However, all such trees, sophisticated as they may be, are for the most part ''growing in isolation''.

Very little information needs to be entered about any person to get started - just the name, birth, deathdate of birth, date of death (if deceased) and children's names.

The WikiTree project follows the rules of a totally transparent community development very similar to the one behind [[Wikipedia]] (free editing and viewing, respect for and appreciation of differing opinions, languages and cultures).

WikiTree is currently not hosted by the [[Wikimedia Foundation]]. Instead, it is hosted on private servers.  The service can run quite slowly, with the home page may taketaking up to a minute to load. AlsoIn addition, when a large family tree is involved, causingthere can be delays of many seconds between page loads as the family tree graphs inwithin the articles are constructed.

WikiTree made the front page of [http://www.digg.com digg.com[Digg]] on [[March 06, ]] [[2006]] and its servers appear to have gone down in response to the flood of traffic (see the [[Digg Effect]]). The server has been subsequently upgraded.
