After graduating from [[Tulane University]] in [[1913]] with a degree in [[mechanical]] and [[electrical engineering]], he joins the [[army]] in [[1917]], first in the Military Aeronautics Service Division and then the Navy as a commissioned Ensign before joining [[Annapolis]] Submarine School, in [[1918]] and in [[1921]], a commission in the Naval Reserve, until [[1941]].
