Kelly's first 
[[spaceflight]] was as [[Astronaut ranks and positions|pilot]] of [[Space Shuttle Discovery]] during [[STS-103]] in December 1999. This flight was to help repair the [[Hubble Space Telescope]], and lasted for just under eight days. His second spaceflight was as mission commander of [[STS-118]], a 12-day [[Space Shuttle]] mission to the International Space Station in August 2007.

Kelly became a long-duration crewmember of ISS on October 9, 2010, after arriving onOn October 9, 2010 Kelly began his first long say in space on the ISS. He and his crewmates flew a [[Soyuz (spacecraft)|Russian Soyuz spacecraft]] to the ISS.<ref name=Exp25/> He arrived at the station during [[Expedition 25]], serving as a flight engineer. During this flight, Kelly was a flight engineer for [[Expedition 25].<ref name=Exp25-landing/> He took overKelly became the commander of the stationISS on November 25, 2010, at the start of Expedition 26 which began. Expedition 26 officially started when the spacecraft [[Soyuz TMA-19]] undocked,left the station. This spacecraft was carrying the previous commander of the station, [[Douglas H. Kelly returned to space in March of 2015, and is currently serves asthe Commander of the International Space Station on the [[ISS year long mission|one year mission]].<ref name="jsc.nasa.gov" /> In October 2015, he set the record for the total number of days spent in space by anhaving spent more total days in space than any other American astronaut, 382.<ref name="record in space"/>

==Naval career==
Kelly received his commission via the Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps ([[NROTC]]) following graduation from the [[State University of New York Maritime College]] in May 1987.  He was designated a [[Naval Aviator]] in July 1989 at [[Naval Air Station Chase Field]] in [[Beeville, Texas]].
