Crola was one of the most important representatives of the Düsseldorf school of painting at the end of the 19th century. His first major work was an 
[[altarpiece]] for the church at Wahnen in the [[Courland Governorate]]. After winning a medal with a self-portrait at the {{Ill|1873 Vienna World's Fair|en}}, he turned almost exclusively to portraiture with portraits of numerous aristocratic personalities and became known above all for his portraits of artists, including the portraits of the painters Peter Janssen and Eduard Bendemann (1884, in the Berlin National Gallery) and {{Ill|Eduard von Gebhardt|en}} (1886, in the Düsseldorf Gallery) and the engraver {{Ill|(contracted; show full)
