From 1879 to 1884, he was a student at the [[Kunstakademie Düsseldorf]] with [[Hugo Crola]], {{Ill|Peter Janssen|en}} and {{Ill|Eduard von Gebhardt|en}} and at the {{Ill|Dresden Academy of Fine Arts|en}} with {{Ill|Leon Pohle|en}}. Around 1891, at the same time as the painters [[Ernst Friedrich Tode]] and [[August Schlüter]], Süs had a [[studio]] directly opposite the building of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. After a short stay in [[Munich]], he settled in [[Frankfurt]] but moved to {{Ill|Kronberg im Taunus|en}} in 1893. There, he founded the "Keramische Atelier Kronberg am Taunus" within the {{Ill|Kronberger Malerkolonie|de}} in 1898, together with the engineer Karl Vogel and the [[porcelain]] painter Wilhelm Becker. In 1901, the studio was moved to Karlsruhe and the "Grand Ducal Majolica Manufactory" was founded with private funds by {{Ill|Frederick I, Grand Duke of Baden|en}}, of whose artistic and technical director he became.
