===Background===

Following extensive touring in support of their sophomore studio album, ''Sellouts'' (2014), the band's lead vocalist Rylan Stewart announced that they would "release brand new singles" throughout 2015. On June 18, 2015, a countdown was published on Savages' official website. The countdown led to the release of the band's single "Anywhere But Home", which was released on June 25, 2015 accompanied with its music video. The same day, Rylan Stewart confirmed in a statement posted to the band's official Facebook account that they would release another new single in September, however was postponed due to unknown record label issues. On November 23, 2015, the band released their single "Find Someone", a collaboration with electronic music group Candyland, and announced their EP, ''Serenity'', which was made available to pre-order on iTunes Store, Google Play, Amazon, and the band's website on the same day. ''Serenity'' was released on December 11, 2015 through Columbia Records.

In an interview with Alternative Press on November 24, 2015, Stewart confirmed that ''Serenity'' would reflect the sound and influence Savages is levitating towards for their third studio album. it was also revealed that the band would be embarking on a small club tour in Europe and in the United States in early 2016 in support of ''Serenity'' and will enter the studio in Los Angeles, California to record their third studio album in April of next year.

===Singles===

"Anywhere But Home" was released as the lead single off of ''Serenity'' on June 25, 2015 through Apple Music and other digital download retailers. The music video for the single was published on the same day through the band's official YouTube and Vevo channels. In promotion for the single, the band published a countdown on their official website on June 18 counting down to the release of the single. "Anywhere But Home" was written by Rylan Stewart, Shane Constante, and Owen Kennon and was produced by Stewart, Constante, and Kennon (collectively as Savages) and Ian Kirkpatrick. It was received favorable reviews from music critics, although fan opinions were mixed. It sold 79,000 digital copies within its first week debuting at No. 28 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, later peaking at No. 17. It also charted at No. 21 on the Alternative Songs chart, No. 16 on the Hot Rock Airplay Songs chart, No. 11 on the Rock Digital Songs and Rock Streaming Songs charts, and topped the hot Dance/Electronic Songs, Dance/Electronic Digital Songs, Dance/Electronic Streaming Songs, and Dance/Mix Show Airplay Songs charts. Although snippets and earlier versions of the song were leaked onto the Internet throughout the summer of 2015, the single peaked at No. 77 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. It also charted at No. 8 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, No. 6 on the Dance/Electronic Digital and Dance/Electronic Streaming Songs charts, and at No. 22 on the Alternative Songs chart. 

The acoustic redux of the song "Please Don't Say" was released as a promotional single on November 27, 2015. The lyric video for the single was published on the band's official YouTube and Vevo accounts. It debuted at No. 107 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

===Background===

After the success of Savages' debut studio album, ''Edge of Heaven'' (2011), sole founding member and lead vocalist revealed that he would be taking a temporary break from recording, writing and touring in January of 2013, later resulting in departing from record label Fearless Records. Despite his previous announcement, in June 2013, he revealed that he has recruited two permanent band members being Shane Constante (lead guitar, keyboards, programming) and Owen Kennon (drums, percussion). The trio began writing and recording music throughout June and July of 2013, and later releasing the single "Hit and Run" in August 2013, which received commercial success in the United States peaking in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The band released another single, "Reaching for the Floor", in November 2013 and was promoted through a digital EP with the same name in December of 2013. 

The band hinted at a possible release for a sophomore studio album in 2014, however rarely spoke about it in 2013. The band announced that they were signed to Columbia Records. Throughout January and February 2014, Savages embarked on the We Are Savages Tour in North American with supporting acts Mod Sun, Jake Miller, Sammy Adams, and DJ Jayceeoh. The band released the single "Bang It Out", featuring Karmin, on April 14, 2014 which was critically acclaimed and the music video premiered on the same day through Vevo and YouTube. The following day, Savages released ''Sellouts'' as their sophomore studio album through Columbia Records, labelled as a surprise release and was compared to Beyonce's self-titled 2013 studio album. In support of the album, the band toured on the 2014 Vans Warped Tour from June to August of 2013. Throughout September and October 2014, the band toured on the co-headlining Bang It Out North American Tour with pop duo Karmin. On November 4, 2014, the band released "Shots Fired" as a commercial single and premiered its music video on November 14 through Billboard. Another commercial single was released from the album, "Shadows", which was released on December 16, 2014. Throughout January and February of 2015, the band toured on the Sellouts World Tour in Europe and Asia. In April and May 2015, the band toured as a supporting act with Major Lazor and Dillon Francis on their respective world tours. Savages was scheduled to tour on the 2015 Vans Warped Tour, however dropped out of the tour prior to its launching due to "overwhelming touring" and lack of touring members.

The singles "Hit and Run" and "Reaching for the Floor" were released prior to the release of ''Sellouts'' and are featured on the album's standard track listing, however were not labelled album-singles, despite them being promoted through the ''Reaching for the Floor'' EP, which was released on December 3, 2013 independently. "Hit and Run" peaked at No. 7 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart. It also charted in the top 10 on the Mainstream Songs, Streaming Songs, Digital Songs, Alternative Songs, and Tastemakers Songs charts. "Reaching for the Floor" peaked at No. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart and charted at No. 5 on the U.K. Official Singles chart in January 2014. Music videos were published in support of both singles, each directed by Shane Drake. 

"Bang It Out" was released as the lead commercial single from ''Sellouts'' on April 14, 2014 and features pop duo Karmin. The song was written by Savages and Amy Renee Heidemann and Nick Noonan of Karmin and was produced by Ian Kirkpatrick and Savages. The music video for "Bang It Out" premiered through Vevo and Youtube and has developed 17 million views as of November 23, 2015. The single peaked at No. 9 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart, becoming their second best-selling digital single, following their debut single "Blackout" in 2011. A North American tour was commenced in support of the single with Karmin as co-headliners from September to October of 2014. 

"Sellouts", the album's title-track, was released as a promotional single through iTunes Store, among other digital download outlets, on May 2, 2014 and featured English rock musician Danny Worsnop. The music video for the single was published on the same day through YouTube and Vevo. The song charted at No. 14 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart and topped the Heatseekers and Tastemakers Songs charts. "Chasing Hearts" was released as the second promotional single on June 16, 2014 and features post-hardcore band Issues singer-songwriter Tyler Carter. "Savages" was released as the third promotional single on October 7, 2014 accompanied with its music video, which garnered much media attention due to its graphic appeal. 

"Shots Fired" was released as the second commercial single from ''Sellouts'' on November 4, 2014. It peaked at No. 46 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart and charted in the top 40 on the Mainstream Songs chart. The music video for the single was published through YouTube and Vevo on November 15, 2014. 

"Shadows" was released as the third and final commercial single from ''Sellouts'' on December 16, 2014. The music video, which features live shots of the band performing on previous tours, was uploaded to YouTube on December 25, 2014.

The album's sound is a progressive direction towards EDM and dance music sound. The album derives influence from synthpop, electronica, trance, progressive house, and dance-rock. In a review by Pitchfork magazine, Jordan Anderson described the album as "the band's take on futuristic EDM-meets-punk sound."
