===Influence and sound===

Rylan Stewart's influence draws from several genres of music. With his band Metric, he has pulled vocal inspiration from Sting, Michael Jackson, Prince, Justin Timberlake, and Patrick Stump. Stewart grew up in a musical family where his grandparents enjoyed 1950's rock and roll and oldies. His father was heavily interested in experimental rock, psychedelic rock, blues rock, jam band, jazz, reggae, 1960's rock, and 1990's grunge and alternative music, which grew on Stewart. His mother's musical interests also grew on him, which included 1990's pop and alternative music, disco, and 2000's rhythmic music. On social media and in several interview, he has stated that he has been heavily inspired by the likes of Michael Jackson, Prince, The Police, Fall Out Boy, Justin Timberlake, Alanis Morissette, Seal, among several others.

Metric's self-titled studio album features elements of blue-eyed soul, disco, and funk music, heavily incorporated in the tracks "If I Never See Your Face Again", "Makes Me Wonder", "Wake Up Call", and "Kiwi." In an interview with Rolling Stone in April 2007, guitarist Matthew Spooner stated that the band drew influence from The Police, Alicia Keys, The Bee Gees, and Billy Joel for their self-titled debut album. Metric's sophomore studio album, ''Oxygen'' (2008), draws elements of rock, soul, contemporary R&B, and funk music, departing from their previous disco pop-inspired sound. In a 2008 interview with Vh1 Music, Matthew Spooner cited Stevie Wonder, Miles Davis, Earth, Wind & Fire, and The Temptations as influences on the album lyrically and sonically. Their third studio album, ''Last Chance'' (2011) has been said to be a mature progression towards a more adult contemporary sound, using elements of hard rock, funk rock, and blues rock throughout the album's entirety. Frontman Rylan Stewart has said that ''Last Chance'' was his first taste at songwriting and dabbling in audio production and design. Because of this, Stewart had creative control over lyrics and sound and cited Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5, John Legend, Justin Timberlake, and Stevie Wonder as vocal inspirations. Metric's fourth studio alum, ''Lucky Strike'' (2012), was a musical departure from their signature pop rock and alternative sound heading towards a more commercial-friendly sound. The album uses elements of dance-pop and electropop, as the band worked with commercially successful pop music produces and music engineers such as Benny Blanco, Max Martin, and Robocop. More directly, the album's lead single "Payphone", featuring Wiz Khalifa, was the band's first take on pop rap, the second single "One More Night" was the band's opportunity to experiment with reggae-fusion, and the tracks "Love Somebody", "Doin' Dirt", "Fortune Teller", and "Tickets" show the band's progression towards dance-pop and bubblegum pop. The band's fifth studio album, ''V'' (2015), expressed a more mature pop sound, more favorable than that of the band's fourth album ''Lucky Strike''. ''V'' uses elements of synthpop, electropop, and power pop. Most notably, the tracks "Unkiss Me", "Leaving California", and "My Heart Is Open" were inspired more by R&B and soul music.

Stewart's solo music work has been notably compared to late-1970's disco and 1980's synthesizer and post-disco music. His debut solo album, ''Pop Culture'', was heavily inspired by dance, post-disco, and synthpop. On the album's reissue ''Pop Culture Collection'', the newer additional tracks were largely encompassing EDM and electropop music. Stewart has notably stated in interviews throughout 2014 and 2015 that his forthcoming second solo studio album will be more inspired by modern contemporary pop music, citing Justin Bieber's ''Purpose'' (2015) and Halsey's ''Badlands'' (2015) as influences.
